HELP. after 3 years absolute trouble free motoring my E class w211 2.2cdi decided yesterday it did not want to stop running, (I was halfway across the road, locked & key in hand when I realised the engine was still running). On driving home all dashboard indicators and warning lights were flashing otherwise driving was normal. Disconnected earth lead and then reconnected. At first the key would not turn beyond position 1 but after playing around it fired up as normal.
Now booked in to a local independent MB workshop but they are not confident in locating fault if it is not present at the time.
It had a jump start from a focus 7 days ago when it wouldnt start.
Battery has currently 13+ v
All advice wellcome

Hi, had a similar issue on a BMW which was due to a faulty ignition switch. The Merc being slightly more complicated due to the key design, however that would be my guess ?

Cheers

Did you check the engine oil level - it should be below the max mark when the engine is fully hot (assuming your car has a dipstick)?

And how did you manage to stop the engine - by disconnecting the earth lead? Or was this done later?

And did the garage check for any fault codes?

If the OP stopped the engine himself I doubt excess oil was the problem, if it had been then the engine would have run away until the oil had been burnt off or more likely the engine had destroyed itself?

It needs to be put on Star for a diagnostic scan, iit would be interesting to find out what caused this.

Either the EIS (ignition switch) is faulty or the CAN disconnected before the switch off command was seen.
