Keyless entry, Kick under bumper, Mercedes refuse to inform me how to operate my car safely.

Mine has the opposite problem - opens unexpectedly!
Sometimes I push the "close" button, get bored waiting for it to close all the way and wander off. Come back to find its open again, like a hungry hippo.

It does it if it encounters resistance. I've had to learn to not get bored and watch it all the time! On previous ones, I'd just slam it and if it met with resistance, try again but harder. If that didn't work (it usually did) then I'd have a look to see if something important was going on. By then it was probably no longer important, just expensive to replace.

Thank you very much for pointing out someone whose words will certainly be listened to and taken on board.

I believe that in New Zealand if you trip over a paving slap, I believe the local authority write you a letter advising you to look where you are walking :)
Post #46 includes video of the incident. Ouch!

Just watched that video and first off, how close was this man's leg to the rear bumper, in other words did the leg movement cause the tailgate to shut.

If yes, then that is not good as anyone loading the vehicle might accidentally cause that lid to shut.

I can honestly say that I can hear the electronic gizzmos closing our tailgate??? Are the new ones so quiet that you cannot hear the thing when it's operating? Folks have already stated that newer Mercedes have an audible warning when the tailgate closes.

I accept the op is no longer monitoring this thread (or forum) but with the greatest of respect, is it possible that they might have a hearing problem?

Maybe a hearing problem or maybe a loud environment, or perhaps just preoccupied. Even without an alert the motor and struts are loud enough to hear, and close enough to work out what it is (ie not easy to confuse with a distant noise in most circumstances).

If anyone does have this keyless option can they perhaps reassure me that there is not a concern?

Never had a problem with mine, there’s also an audible alarm should the close function be activated. I suspect the op made an involuntary kick or had something pressed against the key fob which also opens and closes it

I had a problem with this feature on our C class...while trying (and failing) to get it to open the boot, my increasingly enthusiastic foot-waving eneded up with my shoelace hooked up on a cable clip underneath....so there I was, balancing on one foot with two bags of shopping. Not wanting to break anything, I waited for the missus to arrive to help out. Have to say it made me laugh. The OPs ‘event’, not so amusing though, but other than a disable switch, hard to see what can be done to avoid similar situations really. I do get his ire at the rather vague and potentially unhelpful instructions to an extent, but as has been said, there’s only so much a manufacturer can do.

I’ve found the boot stops without much effort, but faceplanting into an edge like that is the bit that’ll cause the damage. I'm always wary round the back of my Jeep as the tailgate lifts just high enough for me to catch the top of my head if I'm not careful.
