It may be ECU controlled, but unless the ECU has a signal informing it of the desired request, how will it know what is needed.
The signal from the kickdown switch tells the ECU that the required action is needed NOW.
I suppose soon we may well be able to speak the instruction, or just grip the steering wheel tighter, or ........................ the options are endless.
