On a MB if you push the accelerator down there is what MB call the 'pressure point'. Pushing the accelerator down past this point causes the car to immediately change to the best gear for acceleration.

If you push the accelerator without passing the pressure point then the car may still decide to shift to a lower gear but it's likely to be less decisive.
