I don't want to pay £1000 for a really rough car.

Can't decide what a "sensible" priced car should be either!

McCarthy cars are often expensive I found when looking around. I wouldn't use them as a benchmark. Dealer/Trader will always be more than private sale also.

The more expensive car is A) younger, B) lower miles C) from a dealer.

Both are nice, but both are more expensive than they should be. My (2000) car had 76,000 miles on it when I got it a year and a half ago, and was from a dealer and cost £5000.
