Yes, the right thing was to take it to a specialist who could have diagnosed issues In minutes using his electronic kit.

It makes no sense to complain about the routine cost of MoT’s / Tyre replacement / maintenance / servicing, on a 15 year old car doing 35,000 miles a year.
