Morning all

I want to enhance the exhaust note on my SL63 (R231), looking for any M157 (CLS / E class / GLE / SL) advice, who's done what, what worked well, what didn't work. It's a daily driver so don't want to anything too loud. I don't have to worry about neighbours for the early morning cold starts - Feedback appreciated

I don't have this exact car nor engine but ever since I got valves fitted before the backboxes, I'll be going with that setup with any other cars if I want exhaust mods. Done a dyno test at MSL too and it showed more low end torque when closed but bit more power up top when valves are open. Get best of both worlds in my opinion

Hi Tyrone,

The most common starting point is to remove the central resonator and replace it with straight pipes. It’s a very simple task for a decent exhaust fabricator and also relatively cheap. The resonator silences the exhaust, so removing it raises the volume slightly. You will still have the cats and rear boxes in place that also partially silence the exhaust.

It’s a good starting point for that bit of extra volume.

The other options are:

Remove the cats. These can either be cut out and replaced with straight pipe, or can be fully replaced with downpipes. Downpipes can also come with sports cats.

Final option is to either gut or remove the back boxes.

For most though the resonator is the best option.

X2 ^^^ perfect configuration, you have the h pipe too just before the delete.

On my exhaust work I had asked the fabricator to do a sleeve joint and then welded. It makes it a slightly stronger joint. 💪 👍

I have a S63 coupe and was wondering what kind of cost is involved in what you have done?
Budget on around £250 -400 depending on whether you just straight pipe the gap where the resonator is removed or incorporate an x/h pipe as well. Some exhaust fabricators are more expensive than others ,hence the price difference.

I recommend Torqueflow in the MSL building Birmingham providing the work done by Imran is being continued whilst he recovers from a road accident.

Thank you for the info.

X/H pipe…which is better suited?

I heard the x pipe lends help with the scavenging effect for better performance but cars with turbos or supercharger it can or appartently negates it. Don't know whether this information is correct though, hopefully somebody could chime in.

But it seems AMG'S are h pipes from factory, its usually built within the resonator chamber. The bridge between the pipes is smaller, about 1" in diameter that is true on the chambers on w211, w212 and w204, from what I've seen. The exhaust pipes on both w211, w204 are 2.5" but on the w212 it measures 2.75". Common trade sizes are 2.5" & 3". 2.75" pipes is less common.

Stick with tradition if you can, seems they come factory with h pipe configuration. 👍

Not sure if this video is of any help 👍

Thanks for all the feedback, I'm trying to find a garage that will do the centre resonator delete, I'm in Portsmouth @ weekends & Tonbridge during the week, called every garage within a 10 mile radius, no one wants to do it. Any suggestions, experience would be awesome

I used Fast Lane, in Romford, its a bit too far though. They operate booking system and do the work while you wait. They have pipe bender machines, expanders etc Tony is the guy I ask for, i don't let anyone else touch my car. His welding is good. As a company, they are okay but a little disorganised in my opinion, especially when they get too many cars and bookings. I found its less busy on cold days 👍

Thank you for the info.

Post#10 covers it. I was also told an x-pipe didn't give any more benefit on a turbo engine compared to a n/a one.
My M157 exhaust was straight piped,, AND MY m113K e55 had a X pipe.
I'd try to find someone with experience of modifying the exhaust on a M177 engine that you have. They should know what sounds best.

Did you do this in the end? If so what did you do and what do you think? Thinking of doing the same, in the New Forest so not far from you.

Yep, all done, sounds amazing, would thoroughly recommend it, no more noticeable noise at motorway speeds or cruising and just the right amount of noise when your on the gas & down shifting

How much did you pay for the work and where did you take it in the end? Does it give you more of the burble/crackling when you let off the throttle/shifting? I don't suppose you are going to the Beaulieu Mercedes day that is normally in September? Would be good to hear one before taking the plunge, bit nervous about cutting into the factory system.

Olli at PCS did the work, £320, pops on the over run, sounds quite brutal on cold starts, M157’s are quite muted compared to M156’s but there’s definitely an improved turbo whist & v8 grumble, I have some clips on my phone but no idea how to embed them…
