Hi guys

After some advice about the M273 500 V8 engine in a 2006-2008 S-Class

I know that the M272 and M273 engines suffer from balancer shaft, timing, idler and camshaft adjustment solenoid valve problems and there is also a MB Bulletin published online.

My dad is really keen to swap his 08 W221 CDI for a petrol 06-08 W221. I have told him about the 350V6 suffering from balancer shaft issues so he is interested in a 500. His annual mileage is very low with town/city driving and occasional motorway travel.

My question is, exactly which problems listed in the MB Bulletin, occur in the 500? And what are the chances of those occurring? Besides those, are there any other engine issues with the 500?

There seem to be many S500s about so surely the M273 doesn't suffer those problems or if it does, its very rare ? :dk:

Most S500s on Auto Trader seem to have 75,000 + miles and some at the latter of 40,000 miles. My dad would consider any mileage below 75,000, so what's the survival rate of a S500 with that kind of mileage?

I think the 350 06-08 doesn't seem a safer option because according to my research, the M272 has a higher rate of engine failure due to the balancer shaft?

Also, what are the current goodwill contributions (if any) from MB dealerships in regards to M272 and M273 W221 models?

Finally, many say avoid a M272 pre 2008. Is this true or just a rumour and does it apply to the M273?

As always, any advice is highly appreciated. Thanks

It's not total engine failure.
It's an issue with a gear wearing prematurely. It's a repair in the region of 1500-2000 pounds.
If you are unlucky enough to experience the issue it's not the end of the world.
The 273 is a superb engine

Thanks for your advice. Isn't the premature gear wear only on the M272?

The M273 doesn't have a balancer shaft (if I'm correct) so what problem does the M273 suffer from exactly?

I haven't seen many posts on the W221 M273 regarding the contents in the MB Bulletin and the 500 is common in the W221.

Would a S500 with full MB history suffer from the 'problem' aswell?
