mercedes c204 c180 coupe 2011
hi guys, new to this thread. not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but if not can you please move it to the correct place.
I have a 2011 mercedes c180 coupe (facelift)- with a 1.8 petrol engine. I'm having trouble starting it. Each time i start it, it tends to start on the third time- after ticking over the first 2 times. this happens almost every time, it will always start on the third time. It does however always start and has never not started on the third attempt. there are no warning light on the dash. I have changed the CPS sensor and the map sensor but still no luck with fixing this problem. I also have go the battery checked and that was fine.
Any advice on this matter would be helpful.
I have searched the forum and haven't found anyone with a similar problem like this- as it does a pattern of starting on the third time.

Hi,when were the spark plugs last changed?

pretty sure i got them changed at the last service in july. is there a way to check if they are working correctly? thanks for your reply

No problem,if they we’re changed they should be on the invoice and last around 40k miles/ 4 years from memory.

I'll have a look at that as soon as i get in. If they were faulty could they have a common pattern of starting on the third time? and then when i switch the car off and start it back straight away it starts as normal (first time)

Not sure to be honest, sounds like an electrical problem but only way to be sure is to get a good independent garage with star diagnostics to check any fault codes-hope that helps and good luck.

So the starter motor cranks the engine OK, but the engine does not start?

And once started, everything runs 100% fine, no power loss, flat spots, rattling noise etc?

(You are aware that this is the M271 engine that is prone to timing gear failure?)

yes, once the engine is started it 100% runs perfectly and back to normal. i did read that, but the symptoms don't seem to match as this has a pattern and seems to start on the third time every time. i think with the timing gear failure it doesn't start at all or have i got that wrong? thanks!

Timing gear issue is rattle on start up-there is a whole thread on it at the top of the engine forum.

Buy a second hand one of eBay and replace them one at a time.

You say you changed cps is that cam or crank sensor?
Either one of these can cause no or bad starting

Hi, I changed the crank position sensor, which made a slight difference for a day and then back to the same

Sounds like a fuel supply pressure problem. The w203 has a complex saddle tank/fuel pump/filter/level sensor system. Might show up as a real time fault code with a good fault code reader. MB Star preferably

I’ll look into this, thanks!

Hi guys,
Still having this problem. Looked more into the fuel pump, I read somewhere that this pump does not have a filter? Or doesn’t have one that can be changed anyway? Is this weird? I will be looking at the fuel pressure ASAP and spark plugs
Anymore advice would be helpful.

There is normally a fuel filter element built into the fuel delivery module.
