As a time served old school mechanic I love doing my own servicing and maintenance as far as possible anyway.

I have heard that a special tool is required for the sump plugs on these engines?

Also, what service issues are there, if any, surrounding the auto gearbox?

no special tool for the sump nut that any enthusiast wouldnt have. Gear box the Auto one has a filter like most auto boxes you can drain and refill but you will need to buy a dipstick. make sure you get the right oil which can be purchased from GSF or ECP. While your at it you may aswell do the diff which often gets neglected.
