mercedes overpriced

one of the reasons is that the US has a very small company car market

One thing that he (and others) have never been able to explain to me is why used cars are so expensive in the US. 3-4 yr old cars are about the same price as here. It kind of makes sense to have low lease rates if the residuals are high, but then if the cars are cheap to start with, why buy used?

This is more to do with the US cars not being type approved in the EU.
Also they don't meet EU crash test criteria, so can't be sold here.

Far be it for me to disagree....

Mercedes recalls 58,000 cars

Bearing in mind my recent remarks about Merc and their "glass palaces" found this on the autotrader site today.
Mercedes recalls 58,000 cars

01 April 2005
The new Mercedes CLS is affected in the recalls Mercedes has issued a recall for 58,000 cars in the UK and 1.3 million cars worldwide to rectify problems with braking and electrical systems.

Mercedes does not consider the issues dangerous, and said back-up systems will ensure the cars work safely until owners can reach a garage.

Brake problems can result in cars entering a fail-safe' mode, in which the brakes continue to work but the driver needs to press the pedal harder.

The electrical fault causes the car to shut down all non-essential electrical systems, such as heated seats. Both issues produce warning lights on the dashboard, advising owners to head for the nearest dealer.

The vehicles involved include six- and eight-cylinder petrol-engined cars produced between June 2001 and November 2004, E-Class models made between January 2002 and January 2005, and E-Class and SL models produced between June 2001 and March 2005. The new CLS is also affected.

Owners should contact their nearest dealer, or call the Mercedes helpline on 0080 01777 7777

Ho Hum....Arriving as a personal import.

It will require an SVA test before it can go on the road as guess what..it isn't approved.

Incedentally has anyone sat in a modern American car. I couldn't fit into a Cadillac Seville..seriously my knees were pressed against the dash with the seat right back.

A German guy got in the car and said "Buy a proper car, Buy a mercedes!"

Spooky huh!

I am no fan of this car dealer, but the American cars they sell are taxed and already registered, so surely all the buyer has to do is stop at every fuel station. ;)

I noticed some nice Ferrari's, SL55AMG and if you are really fussy what about a 2004 E320CDI Avantgarde Estate ;) ;)

I totally agree about your remarks on the lack of space in relation to size though.

I'm no fan of most US cars and have served my penance owning numerous British brands.

Janner,
Have you had any dealings with this company?

John

Hi John,
It's not far from me but I've only been there once. They do have some VERY nice cars for sale. Not heard anything bad about them.
It's like a big boys toy shop!
It's also the place you go if you want to hire a helicopter for the weekend.

:D Many, many years ago one of the partners got banned from driving.

Whilst commuting to work in their 'only' helicopter (the garage was then at Honiton in East Devon) they saw the Police searching a field for some criminals. The pilot spotted the villians and duly directed the Police to the right location. When offered a commendation they suggested lifting the disqualification!! ;)

Suffice it to say it fell on deaf ears.

They used to charter one of their helicopters out to the TV company that filmed the blonde woman flying all over the country looking for clues about something or other??

John

I reckon the main reason for reduced choices is that Americans generally won't wait for a car - they like to buy from stock, so the manufacturers have limited the engine/option choices available to make stocking them more viable. Of course the Americans are also not interested in a C180K, or a 318i, as they've only got 4 cylinders :)

Totally agree with all your well put points, and it is indeed very rare for a customer to actually sit down with a sales person and oreder their very own individually specced vehicle. They tend to list the options they want and then see what cars are available, in what colours and then choose the nearest to what they actually wanted.

Electric folding mirrors are only just becoming available on US 211's.

Regards,
John
