Chances are that if you jumped in a ten year old escort then the heater blower would work, there would be no rust and the wipers would work as well

why is it that Mercedes engineering is second to none but the more simple things they seem to get wrong

I reckon Mercedes were so used to creating their models in the past with solid materials, that they didn't have the same experience of building cars more recently 'on the cheap'.
