The original thread (Within Warranty Servicing) has run its course I think. But it contains some very important info summarised here.

As some of you may know, I wrote the DCUK for clarification for warranties and servicing. They basically told me to take my car to an MB main dealer. This is in fact incorrect. The OFT investigated what DCUK have told me, and it is wrong. So wrong in fact that the OFT are hopping mad and, as I write, DCUK is getting a boot up their backside for giving out incorrect information to customers (was deliberately misleading I think as they did not want to start a precedence).

So here it is: Mercedes Servicing-OFT facts

The original thread 'Within Warranty Servicing' queried on how a new vehicle warranty is affected by vehicle servicing conditions.

The OFT investigated this and created a report last year: http://www.oft.gov.uk/News/Press+releases/2003/PN+170-03.htm .

It is stated in section 3.6 (Page 9) that the OFT believe that DaimlerChrysler had the intention of removing the restriction of a consumer having to have their vehicle maintained at a franchised dealer to validate the warranty.

There is also a footnote on page 9 (no. 13) that states that DaimlerChrysler will be removing this restriction in the New Year (2004).

Further clarification from the OFT is as follows:

1. You do not have to have your vehicle serviced by an MB main dealer to preserve its warranty.
2. Any independent non-franchise garage can apply to MBUK to be an authorised MB service centre.
3. You can take you car to *ANY* garage (even a no-name independent non-franchise) to get your vehicle serviced provided the work done conforms to MBUK service criteria. Your warranty is not affected.

Of course MBUK can put all sorts of restrictions in place, in order to become 'authorised' I've yet to find any authorised none MB garage.
The problem with having a car serviced, to conform to MBUK criteria, is the hassle and agrivation if a warranty problem occurs, and getting MBUK to accept the situation.
