If it’s free 😂. Actually it sounds rather nice and as long as you are prepared to spend when things go wrong and don’t mind the high tax, why not . I think I have seen threads about some issues with the V6 engine , between certain engine numbers, try searching the forum and check

Thanks - unfortunately not free!!

As mentioned there's a balance shaft issue with this V6 engine so you would be well advised to get the engine number and check it against the ranges given in this thread:

How is the price compared to other similar age cars on Autotrader ?
What mileage is the car on ?
Does it have ABC suspension (optional extra on the 350)

Nice car! Not an awful lot of difference in the power output and the MPG compared the the V8 5.0L, The VED will be almost double that of the pre 2006 models.... and you may be out of the ABC worry as most of the SL350's didn't have it ( optional extra ) whereas all of the SL500's have it.... and it can be expensive when it goes wrong, i know!

Thank you I was so excited but have reservations now- I’ll try to get engine number
so if it’s not between those numbers I should be ok?

ABC has it‘s own button near the gear lever . Very expensive if stuff goes wrong .
At 31k (due at 37k) it‘s due a gearbox oil and filter change , budget £250 ish at a specialist.

Check the details in that thread. There are three issues, each associated with a specific engine number range. The first is the biggie - it's an engine-out job to fix and will cost more than most of these cars are worth now. The second will also put the EML on but is not such a big job. The third is just an oil leak, again not a major repair.

We had a 2007 C Class with the 2.5 litre version of this engine. We had a different issue with that - the inlet manifold is a 'variable length' one, and the actuator arm for this mechanism is plastic. Carbon deposits in the manifold eventually make it stiff to operate and the arm snaps causing the EML to come on. You then need to replace the whole manifold or try and get it de-coked and fit an aftermarket actuator arm (MB don't sell this part - just the complete inlet manifold). We traded the car in for a 2019 C Class instead :D

Think priority is to try and get engine number and go from there!
If it happens to be in that range is it curtains then?
No. Just a higher potential for an expensive repair.

Bear in mind that these cars need to look "cheap" to sell - they are just not very desirable. Too new to be a "classic" and can eat lots of cash maintaining them - apart from the engine issues the other big one is leaking boot seals - not such a big issue on its own but it becomes a very big issue when all of the expensive electronic boxes in the boot start to fail due to not liking a permanently damp environment. Then there are problems with the roof....and that's before you start on suspension components - you can see why people would rather buy a simpler 129 or (heaven forbid) a BMW ;)
