Minor Aircon Problem

What drivers need to be careful of is that we source the best servicing and parts we can for our cars, members on here take particular care of their cars ,washing them with two buckets and different sponges, with all sorts of shampoos and waxes, but when it comes to the aircon we go to any garage with a machine and pay £30-£45 to have it topped up,the problem is many of the people operating those machines have attended a one day course,on the scuttle of most mercedes is a little sticker with some numbers regarding the aircon, but these need to be converted into how much is put in to the system,it is very easy to blow the condenser,I always use a aircon specialist IntoCool in Essex they do have a mobile van that will venture out of the county.

It's not anything like torquing up a head gasket, you know. It's not a matter of guesstimating when the correct torque has been reached; it's nowhere near as precise as that, nor does it need to be.

I know the system was low enough on refrigerant to stop working, and after not much more than half a charge, it now works. As you yourself have said, it seems likely the system would cool satisfactorily with only half a charge in it. I'm pretty confident that it's not overcharged. So long as it works, the actual charge level is irrelevant; I'll know it's too low when it ceases to work.

I'm an empiricist, not a two-bucket man (I use a hose, actually). The system was low enough on gas to stop working; I put just over half a full charge in it. I'm pretty confident that it's not overcharged. I'll find out how much is actually in there when I have it serviced at Vanchilla (so-named because his core business is installing and servicing refrigeration systems in commercial vehicles).

I second the point about using somebody who knows what they're doing; trust Mercedes to use a compressor design with which the usual simple check of the LP side pressure isn't an adequate indication. Does anybody know, does this type of compressor have any advantages over the more common type?

Had mine refilled last week. 630gm I think.

Had the same flashing 3 lights etc.

MB specify 590 gm, plus or minus 10gm. Mine's still blowing cold two weeks after I topped it up, so if there's a leak it's quite slow; I'll carry on as I am and await developments, if any, and get it done in the summer.

Mine was pressure tested so I know there are no leaks in the system. Doesn’t take long to have it pressure tested and the refill was only £45.

Well after two weeks it looks like you have won the air con lottery.

I hope so, I just checked the weather in London as I'm scheduled to visit next week. I guess that I'm going to need a jacket :)

The weather next week in London is forecast to be quite warm. That is, however, by UK standards...
