Hmmm......

Having put a new dizzy cap and HT leads on (GSF) about a year ago, i find as i am driving home last night the car is lurching about and very lumpy when pulling away.....

Pop down to Colins in Richmond this morning at 7.30 (dark) and pop open the bonnet to see a Jean Michel Jarre lightshow on the go round the engine......

Mechanic says 'oh dear, these aren't MB leads are they?' i say no GSF, he chuckles...... tells me what i already know, that some pattern parts you can get away with but some have got to be genuine......

Bu***r ....... going to pick the car up tomorrow..... :(

Lesson Learned.....

fellow forum member Bloodmoon had the same thing with some dodgy aftermarket leads, he had them replaced and it made a big difference. That was on a 300CE-24.

Ive used Jimmy's leads on my 123, they seem to be excellent quality and look/feel just like oem.
I had to take this route as i couldnt justify paying £150 for four wires!

Just had new HT leads fitted on my C230K from MB and I was talking to the mechanic and he told me that even the length of them to the mm is vital.

And I was thinking about buying an aftermarket Air Mass Meter until advised otherwise from other MBclub UK members! They saved me what could have been a right headache.

Howard as you found aftermarket parts vary in quality A LOT.

During darkness is always the best time to look for an HT related problem as it shows up so easily.

£170 including fitting .....

I'm off to throw myself under a truck ...... :(

ON the bright side its done.

I have just spent £330 on a repair myself so know what you mean. Just go for a drive, enjoy it and it will all seem worth while. :)

You need to start a wheel-painting service to cover your costs!

Thmsshaun can be your first customer :)

170 is ridiculous! honestly, contact jimmy, even if you have to replace them every few years, its got to be worth it!

MB ones are good, but not made of gold! Its a rip off considering most the dealers just make them up on site.

Apparently , they are not the bonded plug type (a la GSF) but are made up off the roll as it were, as is needed......the caps screw on

I thought it was expensive too, but when you consider the time to make them, fit them etc etc new dizzy cap etc its not so bad....

I think the actual parts were £135 with an hours labour charged to go and get them and make them up and fit them....

I have spoken to others and £150 apparently is about the going rate....

As i said, the hours labour rate included going to get the parts, making the leads up and then fitting them....

Seriously go for the magnecor leads! They are supposed to have a lifetime guarentee! £50+VAT delivered to your front door, 5 min fitting. I'll even write a HOWTO for you :D

Don't the MB leads come pre-assembled?

No in most cases they dont, they have a kit and they make them up on site. I was qouted something like £150 for my 4 cylinder 123 and £250 for my SL!
