Well it was mot day today and the car failed with no advisories.

I took the car in and they guy noticed it sitting low on the drivers front, said it may be the spring gone.

Put it on the lift and failed it as it had split, however there were no other advisories on the car , all the hard work on it had paid off there i guess.
I have new springs coming in at 3.30pm today, so I will try my best to do a photo job on this as well. I have got both front coming in as I may as well do them both as they were the original springs.
If I could have got shocks today as well I would have done those also at the same time however, I am still looking around for a set.

Would have been nice to have an all clear pass, but at the same time this has broken recently so I am glad it has been caught before anything else happens.

Updates as usual when i start along with pics.

Should keep @W1ghty happy!!

Regarding the spring sometimes it is just bad luck. I remember taking one of my cars for its MOT, got to the final corner before turning into the Garage and I heard a massive thud. One of the rear coil springs had failed. Good news that there were no other advisories though.

Well you will get it sorted and know that the car is clean with no advisories.

My sister had her car MOT last month (ford galaxy). Failed on SRS light, rear pads, rear tyres.

had advisories on wishbones and a couple of other things.

I also noted her steering was clunky (failed u joint - needing a new column).

As I had a free week so done it all for her. I paid about 300 for parts and must have saved her a good grand in garage labour costs.

But like with you knowing it is clean from an MOT perspective is a good base line.

You do the best pics buddy :) . I did my E class shocks and springs in the summer on the fronts using Sachs parts from Autodoc but of course they take 8 days to get here .

My BMW X4 M40i has been in for a pre warranty expiry check and it’s first MOT. It has failed on the driveshaft, it needs replacing but luckily it’s covered by the warranty which is due to finish on the 24th of January. Downside is that there is a 10 day wait to get the part, but they are giving me a courtesy car in the meantime.

Update:

Just picked up the front springs, also got a new set of spring compressors, I am going to change the shocks as well but this won't be right now.

When I have five mins free I am also going to pick the back up and check the rear springs, if theres corrosion over them then i will change those as well.
I am pretty much resolved to changing all the front and rear to be honest.

Another thing thats niggling me are the engine mounts and the gearbox mounts.... so I am going to change those also.

When i originally got the car there were no real service notes with it, there's a pile as thick as a yellow pages now.

Ah well... wont be anything left to do on the car soon!!

Update:

Got the shock and spring off, it didn't take long to do. Got some photos as I went along. I will have to take them off again at some point as I am going to fit new shocks as well. I will definitely be doing the rears also. I bought some heavy duty spring compressors however I might invest in a hand hydraulic one off amazon, much quicker and safer.!!!!

I assume the front is double wishbone like the 211 and not McPherson like the 212?

Update:

I am working on editing the pictures.

It didn;t go to plan on saturday, I can honestly say the Hilka spring compressors are a pile of crap!! they were useless.
This morning my friend called by with some seriously old school compression clamps with a much longer reach. It took about 20 mins to get the spring compressed enough to fit.

The Hilkas were from screwfix as thats all i could grab in the time I had, off back they go tomorrow.

Thread and phptos update tomorrow all being well!
