I'm just wondering. When you buy a brand new merc from a dealer why diesel?
Shoudn't be for a person who can spend such amount of money easy to pay fuel bills? Why not AMG and spend few K on a drive around passat or whatever? :dk:

Not always about mpg. Some people like the way a diesel performs; the huge torque and effortless mid range punch. Less frequent fill ups are nice too! :)

Such amount of money? I'm sure most MBs sold today are bottom-engined rep-mobiles or family hatchbacks with prices comparable to most other manufacturers.

True agree
Yesterday was at the dealer one geeza came around. He was after a mirror glass for his new e class - 400£ fitted. He got so upset, was rude to staff like it would be their fault - He drives like a bozoo.Anyway everybody knows when it comes to a new model of any car U won't get a aftermarket piece for it - dealership we go.
Still crying that guy he made a big scene down there-really wanted to slap him LOL
Point is why then go for a new merc when obviously every bill hurts...

Some would simply save the money for a cheap passat to fuel the Merc.

I want a large comfortable car with plenty of toys to batter up and down motorways. What's the point in an AMG under those circumstances?

It all depends on the criteria for purchase.

I have just been quoted £430 a month for an E350cdi sport estate Edition 125 over 3 years and doing 20k miles a year.
The same car in petrol is coming in at £680 a month, I know this as I asked for a quote on an 'Edition 125 E350 sport estate' and just presumed the cdi was obvious.

I then do 20k miles at a cost of £260 a month in fuel, so the E350cdi is around £700 all in.

The E350 petrol is only costing me £60 a month more in fuel if it averages 32 compared with 40 from the diesel, so £320 a month, but when you look at the extra depreciation that car is costing £1000 all in, so £300 a month more.
To be honest £700 a month is too much, and £1000 a month is getting silly.
Well silly for a family estate anyway, if it was a 911 or an Aston fairy snuff.

Don't get me wrong, when I was buying my W211 estate I was desperate for an E500 or even an E350 petrol, but I just couldn't find any, and the two E500s I found were gone within 24 hours.
Used they make loads of sense, but buying new the diesel makes far more sense if only based on the UKs unjust fear of petrol over diesel.

I buy a diesel for financial reasons only, but I admit petrol is a much, much nicer car.

Borys,

How many miles a year do you do in your v8's

If you do fuel miles it does make little sence if buying second hand, however buying the car is the easy bit. Runing them is where it starts to cost. The AMG cars that are now less than say 15K people forget they are 50K to 90K cars and have parts / servicing that reflect that.

Filling them up with £120 of fuel and only lasting say 350 - 400 miles or less is the bit that hurts, especially if its your money.

I can fill mine up and have a range of 1000 miles (ok thats the maximum I've seen)

In the real world its probably as quick as most petrols anyway so why not have my cake and eat it.

The way the roads are nowadays I would rather spend something on track day / weekend toy and enjoy that seperatly.

£430pm...wow. I paid more than that 12 years ago for a cheaper 210 diesel. The cost of these cars nowadays really is cheap...except for the fuel which was 50p a litre then.

so the answer is

diesel is cheaper to buy
possibly nicer to drive
holds its value much better
nobody really cares what engine you have

and it is clear you are jolly successful cos its a brand spanking shiny new Mercedes.

jealous,,,, moi?

Looks like most of new cars being taken on credit.Well I buy mine for cash so it leave me 430£ monthly bill which can be spent on petrol and the car is mine.
Wanted to see opinions what is behind those decisions.
Fair enough matter of choice and taste for each needs.
I'm a V8 fan and none of the diesels will give me that enjoyable rumble.....apart maybe the new A6 3.0 tdi bi turbo 313bhp which sound like a proper V8 lol

To be honest I buy whatever I feel like buying. GL for getting around in the bad weather/general wafting about and a convertible for the *summer*... had an SLK350 which I loved to pieces but as I was aware there was a new model on the way I got rid for a good deal and bought another convertible (E350CDI) that I'd hope keeps it's value fairly well. I like having a warranty for if/when things go wrong so usually get rid when the warranty is up.

Could lease something that is much more of a car (__63 AMG) and offset other costs against fuel, tyres etc but don't see the point as it wouldn't be mine, truth is big engined petrol cars depreciate badly.

Are you buying yours new or are you taking advantage of the huge depreciation on large engined petrol cars?

Doesn't your car depreciate once you own it?

Except it's a V6 bi turbo diesel? :dk:

Waiting to see that lump find it's way into an A7 then I'll have a serious look at one.

I don't know how's your German but check this vid - I'm about the sound m8 I know it is a v6

GRIP - Audi A6 Avant 3.0 TDI quattro - YouTube

Enjoy
