hi all.. i was driving my e280 (1995) today.. when all of a sudden it cut out, hence no power steering, brakes etc all leading me to go sraight into a wall damaging the ns wing bumber and lamp... i then restarted it and it ran fine and has ever since. can anyone tell me what it possibly could have been to cause this as it is obviously a worry on the safety front for me and anyone else.. also when bleeding the brakes is there a particular sequence this needs to be done in.. your help would be appreciated thanxxxxs.

Crankshaft position sensor is the first thing that comes to mind as it is the most important sensor on the car. Everything else relies on it, as it tells the ECU that the engine is actually turning.

When they get hot they can go out of spec and the engine just dies as yours did. As the engine cools a bit it comes back into spec again and the car will start.

Go to a specialsit that understands your generation of Mercs, and check they have diagnistic facilities. then ask for the engine diagnostic trouble codes to be read. It will have thrown up a fault code.

I reckon its the OVP relay...symptoms are exactly the same as those I had on my E280 and also on an E320 Coupe.

Ie travelling along and everything goes dead...ie tacho needle drops like a stone rather than slowly going down as the speed decreases.

If your car is still on its original then its likely to be suffering from dry solder joints which causes the eratic cutting out.

OVP sits up behind the battery and behind the plastic cover the protects the ECU's...take battery out, then plastic cover and undo the two 10mm bolts that hold the OVP relay...easy to identify as its about 3 inches tall, silver, and has a fuse on the top.

Good luck and post back your findings.

Agrees with Vlad. Jukies car had the same problem. Would cut out and everything dies. leave for 5 / 10 mins and it would start again. Tacho dropped like a stone, no dash lights etc. New OVP relay and problem solved.
