MB C220
Took a ride in a new A class diesel yesterday. I was really surprised how much quieter the diesel engine was compared to my new C220 CDI!!!

Really??

We've got the new A220 CDI (wife's) and we think it sounds like a tractor - easily the worst sounding in its class. BMW's 2.0d and VAG's 2.0d's sound much better.

And it's not the Renault engine.

Maybe I subconciously wanted it to sound better than my C220 :-) which like yours sounds like a tractor!

I totally agree, I had a a180cdi for 2 days and it was so much better that my 250cdi. It does seem that the more power you get the worse they become, quite a few of the reviews have found this

Remarked on the quietness of the RENAULT ENGINE not the MERCEDES.

Not the case in v6 3.0tdi guise though, very smooth and not noisy like the 4 pots;)

The BMW lumps are still more refined and more efficient than anything from the MB stable.
Why oh why don't they make a sodding 2.1 version for us CC tax suckers :)

Your C220 CDI must be REALLY noisy then. I went in a new A-Class a few weeks ago and was horrified by the noise. I looked in the glove box for ear defenders but unfortunately discovered they don't come as standard! Why oh why would anyone want such noisy cars? And when they're that noisy inside, imagine how those of us outside have to suffer.
All diesels should be banned.:ban:

Reminds me of a joke...

An elderly gent sends a letter in to Bentley, thanking them for making such a great car, and expressing that the inside is so quiet he can hear the clock ticking.

The week later, he receives a letter from his dealer, apologizing for the noise the clock is making, and that if he pops by they'll get that fixed for him ;)

What version of a class did you drive?

I didn't drive it, I was a passenger. No idea which one it was, I was getting a lift from home to the dealer to collect my car after its first service.

i had a a180 cdi and it was great, so much better that my c250 in nearly everyway. In wasn't the higher power engine which is why ii think it was so much quieter

My wife's had her new A180 SE (Merc engined) for 3 weeks now. Certainly quieter than my S211 E220CDi!
