Had a quick search around but couldn't find another post asking the same question.
On the A312, A40 and other roads around London I've noticed new camera's popping up.
A grey pillar with an arm hanging over the road holding up to 5 cameras.
I'm confused as to why you would need 5 cameras on a 3 lane road?! . .
Same on the other side of the road.
the camera's face the cars and seem to have either an infrared light or some sort of sensor over the top of each one.

initially I thought traffic cameras . . but then I'd expect to see just 1 camera . . or 2 at the most.

Then I though ANPR!

any ideas? . .

They are the new laser death rays -- .................damn been reading Howard's zany thread again.....

:D

So does anyone know what they are really for?

There seem to be more popping up all over the place near me!

I think... but could easily be wrong that they are planning for the 'pay as you drive' additional car tax in built up areas. You have a unit in your car, which you must have or face fine and it tots up how much you drive in the city so they can charge you again and again and again

ANPR cameras that being trialed for Road Pricing purposes would be my guess. That site in same area had cameras on trail for the Westward expansion of the Congestion Charge zone a while ago.

We have some of them here on the way to Ayr. These ones are average speed cameras, up to 4 on a pillar.

They are numberplate recognition cameras for enforcing TfL's new Low Emissions Zone.

You will find all the answers you need here:

Makes interesting reading. I had never even heard of this scheme until now.

Driving through the centre of London in a van is going to get very expensive with 2 charges to pay!

Fortunately it doesn't affect cars (yet!)

When the revenue from this starts to dry up, as people buy more hybrids and cleaner vans, it will extend to cars.
And when that goes another scheme will start e.g tyre rubber causing noise emmisions

Oh dear i for got it was about cleaner air not cash
