Anyone seen the adverts for the new SL?
Shows the car opening /closing the roof at speeds upto 25mph :thumb:
Well not exactly you can only start the operation at a standstill.
Bit naughty :fail

Nevertheless useful, it is embarrassing being halfway through lowering/raising the roof when the lights change and you can't move!

Where is the advert?

Sponsored Facebook link which shows the roof in operation. Also there's a few videos on the tube.
For example

I saw that, it doesn't make it clear you have to be a standstill to start the operation though.

The image above is a good picture of a non AMG car I mentioned in the other thread, they look quite plain compared to the SL63 as though they've decided to drop the AMG bodykit from the 500 and 400. It was one of those I saw at MB World.

I was mulling over moving up to an R231 SL500 but this new model seems to have stalled the market for the 2013-2015 cars, for example local dealer Tim Purslow has had three R231 Sl500s on sale for several months now. Maybe the demand is either for the 400 or the 63, the 500 in no man's land? Maybe pick one up in the winter for 30 to 40k?

The 500 used to be a big step up from the 350. Last year I had every intention of buying a new SL500, but when we went for a test drive they didn't have any 500's just 400's. The moment we drove the 400 we realised that was more than enough for what we wanted the car for and about £9K cheaper.

The 400 kind of made the 500 obsolete. As it was fast enough to be a genuine option (330hp 0-60 mph in 5.2s) and noticeably faster than the Sl350 the engine replaced. If you don't feel that's fast enough it will easily remap to 400hp.

So anyone that wanted big power went with an SL63 for the looks and noise, the 500 pretty much became a victim of the 400 and not that many of them seemed to have been ordered. We love our 400 and at no point to date have I felt I should have got the V8. That's mostly to do with the fact we take it out on a sunny day with the roof down for a cruise.

Tonight I tried this open and closing and it does work. But still think it's a bit naughty as you can see in the picture.
However coming from a 2011 R230 this is much better much classier and better spec looks expensive and imo can compete with the likes of Aston now.

What's the reason it can only be started at a standstill?

If the mechanicals can handle the air drag at up to 25, why can't the process be started unless you're at a standstill?

I can imagine being on a road with no opportunity to stop, and the heavens open up. You'd look very silly driving along getting rained on. And would piss off drivers behind if you came to a standstill for apparently no reason whatsoever only to then set off again with your roof moving.
