Been a while since I/we had an MB. It was then old style SLK320, but it had an argument with a Nissan and they both lost! Since then a few others have come an gone but in order of purchase...
a TVR 280, an MGB, a Chimaera, Porsche S then last but not least a TR7......which has just gone. I sold the Porsche as it was bland....nice but meh. After 2 years of not owning a ragtop, the TR was on offer and I fancied it. Being a 70's disco kid I thought why not. Well they are rare..ish. BUT I missed the POWER........so I sold it last week. So I am now after something I;ve never had, a bigger sportier car and I have my thoughts on a SL350...2009> style. ...why...dunno. just fancy it as i have up to £14k ish to spend and I will. BUT its not set in stone. I really dislike mx5;s, dont like the **** end of Z3/4's. A S2000 etc remind me of the MGB/Chimaera....so that doesnt leave me with much. A cheap MG f tf....bit small but OK I guess....but the SL............Bit of flash for a year or two then.......UNLESS you can persuade me to buy a..........????

Greetings and welcome to the group,

I had this similar dilemma last year, i already owned a small sports car with a retractable hard top ( Yes i owned an MX-5 ) which was ultra reliable and took corners like the best of the best, I just wanted two things as i age, a V8 and comfort!

So i did opt for an SL and absolutely love it.

Well i did try out a couple of SLK's and to be quite honest there was no more room in them than the MX-5 Roadster, In fact i almost thought about keeping the MX-5 and sending it to BBR for some engine works ( Turbo and uprated brakes ) But decided that a 270 BHP MX-5 would not be a pleasant experience and probably less comfortable ( It was already un comfortable on very long trips )

The SL is far more comfortable and spacious

I sourced the SL500 and pre 2006 ( Road tax is half the price! And the Gov has enough dosh from me already )

The SL is quite a big mile muncher...fast and comfortable...which is what I WONT be doing!.....maybe the SLK is where I should be looking?

I wouldn't rule out the SLK, I only did because i wanted something bigger! and more comfortable that wafts along nicely.

In you other post you were concerned about the ABC issue, All i can add is yes that is the weak point with this model and other MB ranges that use it - However it works supremely ( and yes i did have to replace my struts and yes it was expensive!! ) But should last for another decade or more ....

I think I will steer clear of the ABC 'd ones
