Noise when cold

Hi Members...........
As some of you may already know, I am a relatively new and proud owner of 2004 54 plate W203 auto. It has been in my ownership for about 2 months now and I am slowly becoming atuned to its little noises etc......
I have noticed in the last week or three that when its cold (before the temp gauge is off its stop) the engine/gearbox has an almost turbine like whine. Its not loud, nor is it unduly intrusive. Once the engine temperature has reached about 60 and rising, it goes, never to return until the next cold start.
Its due a B service in about 3K miles. I was wondering whether this may have anything to do with the auto fluid - I am guessing here......totally.
Has anyone experienced anything similar, and if so, is it something that I can safely ignore, or perhaps requires attention?

One further question.
Does anyone have any experience of the Mercedes service centre in St Mary Cray near Orpington? Any reports would be most welcome.

Thanks to all in advance..............:)

Don't worry, It is normal.

I was worried about this on my car (87K) and recently had a hire car with 4K and the exact same whining.

It's just a gearbox characteristic and most autoboxes do whine when cold. It's when they whine warm that you need to be concerned. Although some' lesser' makes do whine when warm AND healthy!!

Thats eased my mind.....Thanks very much.
I was hoping that might be the answer, but having read so many tales of woe here, I was beginning to have my doubts.
Cheers ! ! ! ! ! ! :bannana: :bannana: :bannana: :bannana: :bannana:

You're welcome,

I know the feeling.

Similar situation to myself. Never noticed a whine but just a bit noisy starting from cold. Whether or not it's related I don't know but changed from Sainsbury's City Diesel to Esso and use Millers Power Plus, or as it is now, Diesel Sport 4 or similar, and as recommended by Dieselman ( thank you ), and is certainly quieter on start up as well as idling.
