Nokia/COMAND Challenge......

I've just bought an '02 C32 AMG....what an awesome car!

It has COMAND + a mobile phone system in the centre arm rest using a Nokia 6210 phone.

Whilst a Nokia 6310i mobile phone seems to fit in the cradle and charge, the COMAND system doesn't seem to pick it up/recognise it.....any ideas?

The easiest thing to do is replace the cradle with the one for the 6310i, although it is apparently possible to update the software on the older cradles so they work with later models - physically they are the same.

Thanks for the quick response, do you have any idea of the MB part code for the correct cradle.......?

Is it a relatively easy job to change the cradle....?

Hi,

I don't knowabout your car, but on my W210 I also had to change the main control box as well.

Maybe buy a used PSE for that type of system. I have a spare 6310i PSE if you live in Australia. The cradle only needs to be replaced if you want to eliminate errors in the display for when the phone is inserted after the car is running.

Personally I would invest in the following.

UHI cabling conversion kit
----------------------------
* UHI PSE
* UHI conversion cable for armrest
* felt covered insert in armrest for UHI dock
* cradle of choice (up to 25 phones and expanding)

Would take a logical person about 2 hours to install the first time.

Depends on how much you want to spend.

Thanks for the note......further investigations seem to be leading me to the same conclusion.

On the basis my existing cradle + curly cable (MB A 203 820 0651) has the ability to be picked up, I think I'm going to need the following:

(1) New Control Unit ~£250
(2) New Cradle ~£25
(3) New Power Cable ~£12

Did you fit the new control unit and if so, how easy was it?

Is it located under the phone system, hidden away or in the dash somewhere?

At this stage, I don't know whether I'm going to need a COMAND software upgrade

I'll keep this thread going with my experiences, findings and appropriate part codes just in case my experiences are of use to other peopel

Your suggestion would be perfect....thanks for the offer but I live in the UK

Do you have the part codes of the bits 'n' pieces I'd need for a UHI conversion?

Do we know if the UHI parts will work on comand 2.0/2.5 units or just the newer models?

The UHI route looks like the best....

Based on your experience, how difficult is this equipment to self install?

In addition, do you the part codes I'll require for this upgrade (my car has a UK COMAND) system?

Cheers AH101

UHI can also be installed in pre 2003 models... There is some phone kit info on this website: www.MBenzNL.com.
Cool, I need to schedule a trip to the garage in Marienvelde again for comand/instrument cluster/steering wheel swap, phone kit installation, fitment of Volstrom rear wing, AMG styling pack (if Steve didn't sell that one he was holding for me) and a few other bits and pieces! :)

I think MBenzNL can get the parts you need. But since you have the Euro spec car... Is the 6210 phone facotry fitted, or is it aftermarket?

If it's factory fitted, retrofitting the UHI system shouldn't be too much of a problem. If it's aftermarket... well, then you would need a couple of extra parts, I guess...

The 6210 phone system is factory fitted.....it's the one with the curly cable which also allows you to pick the phone up as well.

The existing cradle part code is A203 820 06 51...

Is the conversion to UHI a tough install?

Cheers

Shouldn't be too hard. Having the factory fitted phone kit installed means, that you do not need any extra parts (such as rear view mirror with microphone, for instance).

If you send an email to [email protected], and give us your car info (throw in the VIN number as well, please, so I can have your car checked), we can tell you what you need and if it is a rather easy DIY.

I live in Sydney and just got a C180 W203 2001model. It comes with phone kit which can only be used with Nokia 6310. I tried to use 6210 but doesn't seem to recognise. It says "processing" and nothing happens.... Any idea.... where to get teh Convertion kit in Sydney, Australia.

Yes. Two ideas in fact: you can ask MBenzNL to send you another phone kit (as you definitely need another phone kit if you want to use a different phone, as the Nokia 6310i kits only work with the 6310i phones!). Although you must keep in mind that 6210 is NOT compatible with UHI.

Or you can contact Miro. He is located in Australia and knows his way around MBs as well.

greetingz,

BigSis
