Hi hoping someone may be able to give some advice as I’m at a loss as to next steps
So I have a 2012 Viano 3ltr V6 125 edition, 90k miles
Always been great but have decided to sell it because of getting a lease car for my work, there was a very small leak and wanting to make sure everything was attended to before selling I booked a local garage to have a look. as there was a lot of oil around the rear crank seal they said this was leaking and I agreed for them to fix, when this work was completed they told me that unfortunately it hadn’t solved the leak and they would investigate, they then diagnosed that the oil cooler at the top of the engine was leaking and the oil was draining down onto the gearbox and this is why they had thought the rear crank seal.
I agreed for this further work to be done, work was delayed as half way through the mechanic dealing with it put his back out, two weeks ago he returned and finished the job.
I collected the car and had gone no more than half a mile before realising that the noise from the engine wasn’t right and so turned round and took it straight back to them.
Another week gone by and they are now saying that they found brass filings in the oil and this means that a certain bush or bearing is wearing and the only way the noise will get better would be to effectively rebuild the engine with new parts, this they think will come in at around £3k ! (On top of the £750 they want for the work done already).
The problem is I’ve lost faith in whether I will ever get the same car back and not sure I want to throw good money after bad, so am I better to try and sell it as it is or do the work and try and get full value. Or do I take the car to Mercedes and ask them to diagnose and tell me if the garage has caused the problem.
Apparently this is a very common problem with these engines approaching 100k miles but I can’t find anything online saying so.
Would really value some second opinions on next step.

GET A SECOND OPINION FROM ANOTHER GARAGE. YOU HAVE TO BALANCE THE COST OF ANY REPAIR AGAINST THE ULTIMATE VALUE OF THE VEHICLE?

Who said this is a very common problem - the mechanic? Did they say which bush they think has failed? Presumably the noise wasn't there before they did the work so you have to conclude that their actions have caused the problem.

They misdiagnosed it in the first place, so I'd not be throwing good money after bad with them at all.

I agree with Grober above, you want a second opinion. Personally, I'd use an MB specialist and not the main dealer on a 2012 vehicle.

So when they diagnosed the rear crank seal , how does that explain that oil was coming from above that point (oil cooler seals, very common on the om642 engine) ?

Apparently there is a drain in the engine that means oil leaked from the top drains down onto the crankshaft seal, when they got the new one apparently Mercedes have changed the design of the seals to prevent misdiagnoses in the future? To be fair they could diagnose anything and I wouldn’t have a clue what they are talking about, I used the garage as a friend has the same vehicle (but a Vito) and has always used them, they’ve always been good with me in the last few years I’ve been using them so I had confidence that what they were telling me was correct.

Thanks yes it makes sense, not sure there are any mb ‘specialist’ on the Isle of Wight and a bit worried about driving it any significant distance and making things worse but I’ll have a look around, it wasn’t the main dealer who did the work it was a garage I’ve used for 3 years on a personal recommendation from someone with the same vehicle

Yes he told me that he’s looked online and seen no end of people saying this particular part wearing away is common 🤷‍♂️ I feel the same it went like a train when it went in to them and sounded spot on, I drove a couple of hundred yards with a strange flapping noise before realising something wasn’t right

Yes I think you are right, whatcar say £12k but if it ends up costing me £4K to fix it might as well let it go to someone who knows what they’re doing for 8/9k maybe, I’m sure someone can fix it for a fraction of what the garage quoted and make themselves a few quid

Sorry to hear your tales of woe. The only significant problem with the om642 engine is the oil cooler seals. If they had known that then they would not have messed with the rear crank seal anyway. They have now caused a third unrelated fault which is definitely 100% NOT a common om642 problem. These engines run for hundreds of thousands of miles with just regular maintenance and anncilliaries such as turbos, oil coolers etc. There is nothing common goes wrong to create filings in the oil. They have messed up big time and now they are asking you to pay the bill. My recommendation would be to call Olly at PCS in Horndean and get the van to him for a proper assessment of who has caused what together with an estimate for a PROPER repair. You can be sure that if you have work carried out at PCS it will be done correctly and you will not be left with mounting bills and no van.

Thanks so much I think you’ve summed it up perfectly I will give olly a call and chat it through

You could cut your losses and sell it.
You could pay and have it restored to a reliable state.

An experienced MB indie would have gone straight to the oil cooler seals, knowing that to be the common culprit.

We assume the garage you used has created this latest issue, it does sound like it. So that sounds like a claim from them for the unnecessary cost of the 1st repair attempt and the cost of what ever is the issue now.
This isn't mere 2nd opinion territory its going to need a full report, prepared for court by some one the court will accept as expert in this area. A good day in court and you get that cost back.
Really you should 1st talk with your garage to see if there is a reasonable compromise, personally as I view they have proved their incompetence I don't see it as reasonable that they should get a 3rd crack at this.
Document it all, dates, times, costs, statements.

The garage might buy your Viano at pre repair value, resolution achieved if you want to sell anyway.
