A180 CDI
Hi

I have an issue with my car and it is not starting

Car details
  • Mercedes A-class 2008
  • Model - A180 CDI Diesel
  • Engine - W169

Issue background
  • Day1 - While driving at around 50mph , "ESP inoperative" message appeated for 2 secs. This followed by "Display inoperative" message for a second and car came to a stop. I had to remove the Key and wait a minute and then car started normally and drove good for the day.
  • Day-2 - the same sequence of messages and I had to wait for 15mins for car to start and all good for that day.
  • Day-3 - same sequence of messages when i was close to home and this time it is not starting at all. When put the key in position-2, it shows "Oil level cannot me measured" message. No crank but i can hear the starter

Tests
  • Battery is good and showing 12.4v
  • All the electricals are working [lights, locking, windows, horn, wipers, socket etc..]
  • I have tried disconnecting the batttery negetive for 60mins and tried starting the car, no luck
  • I've checked all the wiring under the bonnet and everything seems to be connected
  • I've tried connecting an OBD2 scanner and it didnt power up.

As the OBD2 is not able to connect, iam thinking this could be due to engine ECU and I might need the new kit
As there is not crank and car was actually cut-off , i'm thinking it could be Crankshift sensor as well [ im unable to locate this to check physically]

As there are no codes to look at.. I'm completely blocked.
Any help is much appriciated

I was looking at the codes read just after the first occurance of the issue and can see code 1610 - check component K100kl(engine circuit relay) switches off too soon.

It is difficult to get to the relays on this car as they are hidden under the passer foot area and can be accessed by removing the few plastics, carpets, underlay etc..

Good news!
Its the relay.
K100kL[engine] - swapped it with K100kC [horn] and started first time and much quicker than how it used to be.

Great news that you have found the problem 👍 Not sure why it would be quicker though? A relay either works or it doesn't? 🤔
