Are oil leak stop additives any good?
And if they are, would they help to stop a problem with an oil cooler seal ?

Sadly nothing will magically stop the oil leak. Assumming you have a M272 these two seals are a fairly straight forward DIY to replace. The only annoyance is having to pull the thermostat and loosing coolant so be prepared with a new gasket for that too. Its easier to pull the entire oil filter housing away from the timming case and then splitting the oil cooler from it else you will have to work around the power steering resevoir or remove it and even then you wont be able ro chnge the gasket against the timming case.

Thanks for the reply. I understand there's quite a few hours of labour involved, and how can you tell before all that work can you know for sure that its the oil cooler seals that are leaking ?

Have use stop leaks and they do work. If used on motor new dose required on every oil change.
It takes around 1000 miles to start to work.
They work by swelling the oil seal 10% according to the blurb.
If the seal is easy to get at then change it

Fix it properly. The seals are very do-able and most MB specialists have done many of them.

Unfortunately they are not easy to get to.

Just need to know if it is the oil cooler seals are leaking. How can you tell?
