oil oil oil

...at the risk of being flippant, you could try looking at the service booklet for the last service where it should say what they filled up with. To be sure, perhaps call them and verify. Just add the same stuff they used...

I agree, have a look in the service book :p

Without sounding silly, if you don't know what was last used, how would we ;)

If you still can't wait, I would use a bottle of synthetic/semi-synthetic 5/40 or there abouts (as in an emergancy situation). Really, you might as well look in the book and get a bottle of the correct stuff tomorrow though?

When's your next service due?

Good luck,

Will

errr. help? :)

I understand the question ;) If I had a manual, I would look up the grade and advise accordingly,

Good luck,
John

Trouble is, there normally seems to be a 'range' of acceptable/suitable grades. Although not likely to be the biggest problem in the world, I'd personally prefer to see what brand/type of oil was used last and use the same if possible :)

Mobil One?, otherwise, afaik, ASSYST will become confused and you will not get the benefit of extended service intervals.

Portzy.

obviously i am looking for a good oil as well, as i suspect John noticed! So (repeat) - what oil SHOULD i use!??!?!?

Haven't you looked in the service book yet?

There are quite a few oils that you could/should use, just that it's probably better to stick with same brand (for topping up) ;)

Mobil 1 or several others that meet the MB specs will be fine, but without knowing what is currently in there...

Good luck (and have a quick look in the book :) )

mobil 1 in mine!!!
has been changed twice in the past though.. began life with an esso oil.. then castrol.. then mobil from an indie at the last change and i have used mobil 1 again....

Although the oil is costly in Halfords, but you can always buy the oil elsewhere. Halfords have a guide for oil in the form of a binder attached to the oil shelves in all stores. The guide lists the different oils that can be used in the car and also the volume the engine holds.

Mobil 1

Mobile 1 will do nicely sir. You will be comforted to know that your dealer will have bought "IN BULK" at a price we can only dream at  the cheapest reputable oil on the market that meets the MB SPEC. Newer cars with their extended service intervals must have a "thin" i.e. 5w50 , 0w40 fully synthetic oil for maximum protection. Old crates like mine seem to thrive on semi synthetic 10w40 and because its a bit more viscous it stays in the engine and not on the garage floor ;) ;) See another of Wolfgangs pages for MB specs but dont suffer from information overload  http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html
