Its gone soft--she said !
The spring that is !
The opening temperature is controlled by that thermo bulb and the return spring.
Both lose their composure overtime due the constant cycling operation it is subjected to, allowing gulps of hot coolant out of the head(s).
This is impotent, sorry , important, because if top pipe bulk coolant temp goes below 79 Celsius regen stops, or glows are sometimes initiated to get the engine temperature up..
Glowplug life is reduced.

Interesting, despite our cars being the same year and basic engine OM642, your thermostat is a different design.
My spindle comes off the internal diaphragm, yours comes off the housing.

Is yours the 265bhp version also?

Good just letting you know from the good 'ol USA.
Where they put up to three stats in the housings of say BIG Cummins & Detriot engines so that you have more durability when its required.
Like in marine appications where it really matters.

Doesn't sound right, I am still new to these but they seem to come in 231 bhp or 265, with the latter having same block but some different components to get the extra.

All W218s CLS 350 CDIs for UK were the 265hp version.

When face lift was launched it was marketed as 350D and the engines were 258hp.
