Hi, a friend just brought a om642 in a merc and was asking me to see if i can find out a few things. Here you guys are friendly so here goes.

1) How many litres oil does it take in the engine?
2) Are the waterpumps easy to access/replace?
3) I read somewhere that there is a top secret trick to tell if you need a chain tensioner or not .. looking at how far it sticks out or something .. if the oil hole is visible? If that rings any bells?

To provide you with accurate information about the engine oil capacity, water pump replacement ease, and the "chain tensioner trick," I would need to know the specific make, model, and year of the vehicle you're inquiring about. Each car can vary, and the details you mentioned can be different for different vehicles. Please provide more details about your vehicle, and I'll be happy to give you more specific information.

If it is the W211 om642 , it is 7.5L , not sure about the later ones in the W212.
Don't know about the water pump
The chain you can see through the oil cap , the tensioner is visible , I believe you can see the number of threads that the tensioner is extended , post a picture on here , there is also details on YouTube .
I believe the later om642’s in the W212 are a simplex chain (not duplex) and are more likely to need changing .

Thanks William .. the car is actually not a Mercedes! It’s a Chrysler 300 on year 2008 and I believe the chain is the older duplex style. The tensioner itself I can see some thread when I shine my led in the oil cap but I can’t visually see the oil hole on the tensioner (which I think is a good sign right) .. so all in all, it’s a 2008 om642 220bhp there or abouts

If it quiet on a cold start then the chain is generally ok.

Water pumps are a doddle.

7.5-8L of 229.51 MB spec oil.

Thanks bud .. I’m 99.9% my pumps on the way out. It makes a grumbly type noise .. very bearing sounding .. and it loses water .. sniff tested ok and visual checks every drive reveal no coolant in the oil and vice versa! No pressureing up and absolutely normal temperatures throughout. But I’m certain I saw a fairly big bit of coolant just below the auxiliary area on my driveway (convenient for water pump)
