Hi group,
i've sold my 17' OM 651 C220d MB, and on my way to buy a OM654 c220d only cause of the color, face lift LED lights and steering wheel shape, unfortunately everyone stop me with the buy 'cos of that rocker issues! Car is 70k miles, 2019.... will be with warranty obviously..... is it so serious issue, and will it happen to all cars or its just a luck and how the car was treated from the previous owner?

Thanks in advance
Have a great week everyone

A noisy top-end seems to be the giveaway. A guy on Youtube that repairs these says that it is usually the rockers on the LHS, facing the engine that go first because the ball races dry out due to the heat on that side. He also noted that replacement rockers have a different part number.

Some of them seem to give trouble around the mileage you're looking at.

Others with better experience may comment and give advice.

Thanks for your reply, yep, watched a lot of them, and honestly… will try to find a car with less mileage or even will go for a petrol 2.0 for example 😞

I'm not sure it would put me off, there are much worse things that can go wrong on other cars. Yes it would be a pain if they failed but its only a rocker cover off, replace and refit job, a Days work for a good Merc indy.

I don't think they all fail. Good servicing would help, service before the recommended intervals. modern engines have such small tolerances and oil ways, it pays to keep the oil clean and fresh so that it can flow properly.

If your looking at it from a main dealer I would make them well aware you know of the issue and what you would expect from their after sales etc. Or even go for an extended warranty for extra peace of mind.

Depending on your annual mileage, a W200 petrol could be a good call. As far as I can see, in the UK at any rate, the 274 lump is reliable with only the thermostat an expensive pain to replace. If you drive one, check that the temperature rises and steadies out without wavering.

All the best, Ernie

It’s online “modern” purchase😉☺️, when you pay you can see the car if not happy then you have 7-14 days for refund( which I don’t believe is so easy as said), but yeah, a day work, and bought with extended warranty could work at least 90%, but ….
Thanks for your opinion though
