Seems as though Merc quality is getting worse. Anybody else suffered with this issue? If you look at the rockers in the video they do look pretty cheap and nasty for such a vital part, I guess they passed Mercs vigorous "will last the life time of the warranty period" test that they seem to stick to these days..

OMG chocolate rockers and lobes & rockers are so narrow causing high loadings like the VAG PD and that's the giveaway noise they make too .

What I don't understand is there is no need for the camshaft lobes to be so narrow there's all the room in the world .

The PD camshaft didn't have a choice.

Looks like Merc have designed some planned obsolescence !

Yeah right...

Yeah the only reason I can see them making them this way is cost cutting / maximizing profit. I was pretty shocked considering the image of quality they wish us to believe.

I think I shall avoid that engine, but what other engines have they cut costs on? Is it time to switch brands?

I imagine that they would justify it on grounds of savings in weight and material used. All good for the environment! A few grams here, a few grams there, and you've soon saved enough to make a difference. We're living in an age when the power consumption difference between halogen and LED headlamps can be a factor in the car's tax band, so such small differences are not to be ignored.

Of course, if the car doesn't last as long as a result then the overall lifetime environmental impact is actually much worse, plus they probably end up using the saved weight to justify adding more shiny bits and bigger LCD screens because that and the monthly PCP cost are all that most buyers care about nowadays.

Details on TSB and upgraded parts cut-in engine numbers here :

Interesting so Merc are fully aware of the issue, I guess we will see a lot more of this issue as time goes on.
