Car
CLK320 and A160
Hello,

My names Rich and I live in East Sussex. I own 2 Merc's. A 2000 CLK320 and a 2003 A160 both automatic.

I have a problem with my A160, it felt like a manual clutch slipping when driving, Id go to accelerate, it would Rev high but move off slow. The engine light also came up and the F showed on the dashboard. I plugged it in and got a P0700 fault. The car has got worse after I left it standing for a week, when I started it up and put it in gear it wouldn't move, just Rev. Got it to move and it now jolts when I put it in D or R.

I have searched on Google and mainly came up with problems in the US which point towards the conductor plate? I have checked the plug that goes into the conductor plate for oil and it is bone dry. When I drained the gearbox oil it didn't look burnt.

I have the conductor plate off. Does it sound like this problem or something else? If so does anyone know where I can source a conductor plate?

Any help would be appreciated please.

Thanks

That fault code is "P0700 Transmission Control System (MIL Request)" but beyond that, when was the last gearbox oil and filter change done?

An oil change can't hurt but may resolve. As for the fault code, I don't know if that is an electronic issue or a mechanical one but I do know that generally speaking, MB autos are prone to problems if the gearbox oil is low or old. That all said, it may be worth hanging around to see what the old A-class experts have to say.

It needs a Star diag firstly.

+1 for Star Diagnosis to get the proper gearbox fault codes. It may well turn out to be the infamous TCU fault and not a mechanical fault - in which case you can send the TCU off to ECUtesting.com for repairs. But it is essential that you get a Star diagnosis in order to determine if the fault codes matches those stated on ECUTesting.com website. Otherwise you could be wasting a lot of time and money extracting the TCU and sending it off for a repair that cannot be done!
