i dont want to format the drive and have to reinstall everything again
any ideas greatly appreciated.i have to hold the power button for 5 seconds everytime i shut down but this is a pain in the butt.

To shut down a frozen computer. Press and hold the shut down button for 15 or so seconds.

Is there anything in the error logs?

Have you try setting the cmos settings back to default.

There is a third-party patch for this error, I had to use it some time ago. Sorry I can post a link as I don't know it and it was on my old PC.

personal experience required a bios upgrade to fix it - was an old ,otherboard running 2000 pro tho . sorry no other ideas

run the windows updates

With old 98 PCs this was a common problem and some of the suggestions above are valid, but not for XP pro.
