Does any generic phone charger fit into the 12v accessory socket that lives in the ashtray? I am a bit worried that it might foul the gear select lever when it’s in park. I would prefer to leave it in the socket rather than having to remove it each time I park. Ideally it would be great if there was a stubby version that would allow the ashtray lid to close over with the charger in situ.
Any suggestions or recommendations gratefully received.

You can get stubby USB adapters I have one but can't remember where I got it from. Try a search on Amazon.
Just found it the maker is BELKIN.

Just thought that clk owners that might have one in use might take the guesswork out of the equation. I have searched eBay and Amazon but until I would physically try it I wouldn't know if it allows the lid to close with the lead removed.

The lid won’t close with anything in the ciggy socket . If you are handy , you can buy a 12v socket with wires on eBay which you can connect behind the dash or further back in the tray that will give it enough space for wiring and the lid closing .
I did this for my dash cam wiring .

That's exactly what I used in my CLK for many years - fits fine, works OK but charges devices slowly.

I eventually made the mod decribed by W1ghty and fitted a QC-compatible twin USB socket in the ashtray, acquired from Banggood. Supposedly supplies up to 42 Watts to the USB device(s).

Ian.

I'm not too concerned with fast charging, it's just to keep the phone topped up if using it for navigation

I just plug the phone into either the USB in the glove box of the back of the headunit or one of the USB ports in the boot.

AFAIK I have neither of those options

Found this and I think it may be what I am looking for
Mrs S has one of those in her Leon. Works well and is reassuringly well built out of aluminium rather that cheap n nasty plastic stuff. As IanW says a bit slow but if you just want to keep your phone topped up whilst in use it's perfectly ok.
