Hi everyone, this is my first here…

I’m moving jobs, which means I need to hand back my company car (2020 CLA220d premium plus) and purchase a car of my own.

Due to family reason, we need an estate - I’ve been looking at C Class, 3 Series and A4, but the Merc comes out on top for me. Great tech compared to the BMW and I’ve had a fair few VAG’s before.

So I’m going to look at a couple of 2019 W205 220/300d and while my company car hasn’t missed a beat in 2 years, I thought I would get people’s opinion on the W205? Any glaring flaws or issues people have come across with this model?

And advice would be great!

Welcome :)

I have a W205, albeit the C43 and not a 220/300d. It's the first Mercedes I've ever owned, I've had it three and a half years and it's given me trouble free motoring during that time. No issues for me whatsoever :)

The W205 is a great car, especially the facelift model (2018-2022), and even more so with the digital instrument cluster... I drove one of these as a rental in the Netherlands and really liked it.

With regards petrol vs Diesel, my own personal view is that unless the car is covered by manufacturer warranty I would steer clear of any Euro 6 Diesel engine with the AdBlu system due to the potential high repair costs if anything goes wrong. For the same reason I would personally avoid the early Hybrid cars (C350e petrol and C300h Diesel). Again, person opinion.

Re the petrol car, if you are after the basic model (C200) then the pre-facelift model has the M274 2.0L Turbocharged engine, while the facelift model is equipped with M264 1.5L EQ Boost mild hybrid engine (this was the car I drive in the Netherlands).

Another option is the C300 that has the highly-tuned variant (254 bhp) of the M264 2.0L EQ Boost engine, though unfortunately these are quite rare. And, of course there are the AMG cars, from C43 through C63 and up to C63s or BS.....

That’s for the replies so far. I love the tech (digital dash etc) in my CLA, which makes it harder to buy a car without it. I’ll be doing about 20k miles a year, so really needs to be diesel. The 220d engine has been great, good economy with enough power, looking forward to RWD in the C class though.

If you get a 2019 it will be a facelift which should have the digital dash :)

I’ve put a deposit down on a 2019 C300d, in black…..the other half says it looks like a hearse. Can’t wait to pick it up!

That's good because the 1950cc OM654 engine isn't a good prospect as the mileage racks up .

I doubt it because the issue has only come to light 11 months ago and the problem will only rear it's ugly head out of warranty , so Mercedes will do 0 .

I wonder if the high cost of dealer servicing is part of the problem, given that not everyone has access to a good independent specialist. Is this the reason some people cut corners on maintenance when their cars get a little older? Failed bearings does sound like an oil-related issue.

Hi all,
I small review of my W205 C300d.

I really like the car and other than Mercedes honouring their side of my purchase (replacement parcel shelf), things have been great. Love the digital display, really comfortable on long journeys, not too bad mpg and plenty of power when needed! Recently did a 350 mile round trip with a fully loaded car, 4 adults and a dog…handled with ease.

There are a couple of things that haven’t lived up to expectations, the main being the wind noise coming through the front windows at motorway speed, it’s really loud and actually sounds like the windows are slightly open. Has anyone else noticed that with this model? I’ve also had a few apple CarPlay crashes/freezes, which is random and annoying - it can sometimes take a day before it’s back working as normal. These 2 issues aside, I’ve really enjoyed owning the car over the last 3 months.

(I now have a slightly scuffed parcel shelf/dog guard for sale if anyone is interested?)
Cheers

Yeah it's a common issue on some cars around the tops of the doors. But surprised it is still present with the facelift.

No proper fix unfortunately. Some resort to complaining hard to Mercedes and get acoustic glass fitted (an option in some markets) to block the noise out. Others resort to buying tape and applying it around the doors to form a tighter seal. Some I believe adjust the door / re hinge it so the door seals mate better.

I've not got it on my two cars but had it on a courtesy car, and test drive car.

Mine doesn't have a dig dash; though I had to search for one without one. My 2019 A3 has one and I disllike it intensely; I much prefer an analogue rev counter. The centre wider screen in the facelift model, is all that is required for a graphical interface IMHO.

Touch wood, Apple Carplay is faultless in mine. When a inserted a brand new SD nav card (orifgnal was missing!), the car proceeeded to perform what seemed like a large update to more than just the Nav. I wonder if you can get the firmware/software updated and hopefully cure the issue.

You only get the wider centre screen with the Premium Plus package. Personally I like the digital dash and the way you can have things like the sat nav directions directly in front of you instead of having to look to the side.
