Problem with panoramic roof following B service

I have a Merc E207 coupe 2015 40k miles which has just had a B service with my local authorised Mercedes service agent from whom I purchased the car and have serviced it since. I have had a problem with the panoramic sunroof the first time I used it following the service. I has always worked perfectly. The window would open fully as normal but when I tried to close it it would reverse when it reached about 6 inches from the closed position. This happened repeatedly. I managed to close it by applying a pump action closing it about an inch at a time. The next time I opened it exactly the same thing happened so I brought it back to the Dealer. They said they would put it on diagnostics and said that was giving several (unspecified) errors. They would not allow me speak to the engineer so was dealing with a less than helpful reception who was interpreting what they were told and said I would have to book it in for a full diagnostics at a cost of €350. My question is should the B service not include diagnostics, what diagnostics would they have run when I brought it back and what diagnostics will they run that costs €350 before they do anything? Thanks in advance.

You normally agree to pay for the diagnostic and if it’s a warranty fault the warranties pays (this is the same for all manufacturers). Nothing in the service is about reading and clearing stored codes - you can see in the service sheet what they are expected to do.

Best ask the dealer your questions, irrespective if you want a working sunroof then start with them, if they caused it they (probably) will fix it.

Assuming you’ve checked the runners for obstructions and have gummifledged (rubber treatment) the seals etc

Did the last service include 'panoramic roof lubrication' (due every 3 years)?

I had exactly this problem a couple of weeks ago. I managed to get it shut and it seems better since.

Did you find out what the issue is?

@markjay Mine had the lubrication every 3 years and it looks like there is plenty of grease. Is this common? Should I daub more grease on?!!

£350 for a diagnostic check is a complete joke , the only issue you have is the pan roof so (IMHO) all that is required is a diag check of the motor / switches not the entire vehicle ??

I have a similar problem with the roof on the Cayenne , tried lubricating it with the correct (expensive) slippy stuff but it still needs nursed the last few inches to get it to close properly. Looks like the motor is stopping due to its over-current protection possibly caused by the motor being tired or a tightness in the roof workings , both of which are an expensive job due to the price of the motor or the labour involved to strip and repair the workings , so it is getting left as is.

When you look at the precise tolerances involved in any pan roof system it would not surprise me if any flex in the body over time could be enough to knock the sizes outwith manufacturers spec.

Looks like it is time to seek out a decent independent.

No ,generally the roof lube process is pretty precise.

On the Porker i had to buy three different types of lube , one for the rubbers / one for the seals / one for the runners , i also had to buy various weird shaped brushes to access the lube points and after £100+ it made no difference to the operation of the stopping roof.

Best leave it to the people in the know.

Thanks @st13phil and @KennyN thought that might be the case!

Actually taking mine in next week and going to get repair covered under warranty..... assuming they can find anything wrong with it!

€350, actually, but still a complete joke....

Did they have reason to disconnect the battery at the service? These are the symptoms that you will get when the sunroof needs to be reset after the battery has been disconnected. Take a look in your manual or search on you tube for the reset procedure. Or ask your dealer......but that might be 350 euros.....

Thanks everyone. Especially interesting to know the panoramic roof lubrication should be done every 3 years. I cannot see note of that but will ask. I was trying to find out if B service includes diagnostics, what diagnostics would they have run when I brought it back with the roof closing problem and what diagnostics will they run that costs €350 before they do anything?

Not sure if you saw the update on my similar problem yesterday. It's in the "interior" forum. Basically, a spray can of silicon grease solved what sounds like the same issue for me. Spraying with the straw between the rubber runners in front of the guide that runs there.

Hi , I always feel that if the garage will not allow you to speak to the tech they have something to hide.

Update: Before saying anything I should add that three weeks and about 800 miles on from my B service the break pad wear waning came on (My service report indicated 5ml on pads suggesting they would need to be replaced before next service). I immediately booked the car in for breaks and sunroof diagnostics described earlier and was given a date of today (2 weeks). Left car in at 9.30am indicating I needed it back today. They said they would ring me. No call by 5pm (they close at 5.30pm) so rang them. They said they were working on the sunroof and that car needed front break pads and discs but that the breaks had not been done because they did not have the parts (main dealer) and would have to book it in another day which I did.

They said they had done a software update for the roof and oiled it... now working fine as before it went in for B service!!! I questioned why the pads and discs had not been checked/highlighted during service and why given they had 2 weeks notice of the break warning that they did not have the items needed available in stock!!! Shabby and very disappointing Mercedes Service. However, to give them some credit they waived all costs for fixing the sunroof!!! God knows what that breaks will cost. Very tempted to look up an Indie!!

On a separate if related point does anyone know how often engine oil should be changed (E250 coupe 2015) as I see no mention of it on the service report?

I'd have the pads/discs replaced at an indy due to the far lower labour charges.
Engine oil should be changed every 12 months or 10k miles, whichever is the soonest.

On a 6 year old car with 'normal' brakes I would opt for an independent even if he gets the parts from MB he you will save a fortune on labour.
