Problems with Desktop appearance

Yesterday I let my neice print some stuff off her USB adapter for uni and now my desktop is all to c***. On the left of the screen is a windows task bar, I can't rearrange desktop icons manually and I can't put any microsoft files eg word or excel in a new folder via drag and drop. She used word and powerpoint but said that they had to be converted on my computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

What OS are you running?-to get task bar at the bottom again-just point onto it with left click button pressed then move the mouse pointer to where you want it.

1) You can drag the task bar to any side of the screen. You may need to right click on the bar first and deselect "lock the task bar"

2) Right click anywhere on the desktop and you should get a menu pop up. In those menus there will be an option somewhere for "auto arrange". Deselect that, and you'll be able to move the icons around. Also take off "align to grid" if you really want to be haphazard.

Unlikely, but if you think the USB stick had some virus on it just download from malwarebytes.org (free version is all you need). Detects and removes any virus etc.

I think TiP's advice should be fine, though, but I'm wondering why things did what they did on your PC (any idea what may have caused it other than some virus?)

I may have explained the problem incorrectly, when I said taskbar I meant the menu column that appears in a window (say My Computer) on the left hand side, the one that gives you folder options or info on a selected folder. That is what appears on my desktop.

I've tried the options with the icons, both auto and grid unticked but the icons keep bouncing back to where I dragged them from. I'm certain it's a Microsoft Office problem

Any way you can take and upload a screenshot so I can see just how the menu appears (I know which menu you're talking about, but I want to see just how it looks on the desktop)

I think you click on edit under your first post and there will e a drop down box next to where you entered the thread title. Just change it to [Solved]
