R129 500SL
IDLE problems on my 500SL R129 have been doing my head in for years. Spent tons of money on all the pipes and other things BUT watch this video on utube. THIS IS WHAT IT TOLD ME , Put the key in until all the lights come on in the dash, number 2, KEEP it in for 4 minutes, AFTER the 1st min if you have the bonnet up you will hear a clink. Keep the key in for another 3 mins. After thr times up TURN THE KEY OFF AND TAKE OUT. Mine make this sound when you take the key out.
Put key back in and start and MAGIC HAPPENS.
MINE WAS RUNNING at about 9 NOW 6 RPM AND THE CAR IS RUNNING THE BEST IT HAS EVER RUN AND I HAVE HAD IT FOR 10 YEARS.
Its electric the 500SL and this might work on other older mrecs.
JUST PASSING THIS ON AND HOPE IT GIVES SOME JOY TO OTHER R129 OWNERS

1) Lay off the caps. There's no need to shout.
2) What video?
3) You realise you come across as just a little bit loonspud? There's probably a rational explanation behind the process you mention, although it's not one I've heard of in all my time with 129s.

sounds rather unlikely. Certainly never heard of it before or any sort of key reset on a 129 (one of which I owned for six years). I had idle problems on a similar aged 560 sec w126. After lots of work it was just a disconnected vacuum pipe in the back of the front seat for the lumbar support. the vacuum is taken off the inlet manifold and if its broken it affects inlet pressure. Connected it again and rock steady idle.

Give it a try , theres nothing to lose if any R129 500SL owners are havinf IDLE problems. THIS WORKS 100%. I have spent £100s on Vacum pipes and leads and this U-TUBE Video i watched blow me away. I ran outside and did it and the car has ran the best it has in 10 years.
Because i new on here i can not put a listing up until i reply to 30 posts. Been on the mercedes. org site for years.

Now that's all cleared up, we can assimilate the following knowledge:

If it's an ETA calibration problem. It will do nothing for the other reasons for rough idle, such as poor distributor cap/rotor arm/insulator, vacuum leaks etc.

If this is via a garage, you need to find a new garage as they really should have checked this long ago. Otherwise, it demonstrates the importance (and art) of tracing the problem rather than blindly swapping parts.
