Had an abs sensor fail on the SL earlier in the week, showed the tyre monitoring system failure as well as a number of dash lights and went into limp mode. Bought a new sensor from Newcastle mercedes via their eBay site, £19.40 delivered (see picture for part number, it fits both sides).
Jack the car up and place on axle stands then remove wheel. Rear part of wheel arch liner needs to be removed which was a series of 10mm nuts on the main part, 4x8mm bolts underneath and several plastic push pins. Once the liner came out it was easy to see the route the cable went. I removed the plug which is joined to a connector with the brake wear indicator, seperated them then clicked the new connector together and pushed them both back into the socket. I pulled the old abs sensor wire out of its holder while pushing the new wire in until I got to the axle hub. A single 8mm bolt holds it in place and the old sensor came out easy. Pushed the new one in and and bolted it up. I checked the cable to make sure it was firmly in its holders and secured, then replaced the wheel arch liner, replaced the wheel and job done! Due to going into limp mode I needed to reset the ECU and off I went for a test drive.
