Hi, when I release the boot on mine,(new to me) it just unlatches. Should it not open all the way?
Cheers
John

The electric powered ones will but the non electric will just spring open and stay there.

Remember that, historically, there was that water ingress problem on the Pre facelift R230 because of the shape of the boot lid. As a result, both the designer and user would have been wary of the thing springing open, and dropping water into the boot, when the bootlid was wet.

All that said, on your 13 year old SL, the dampers may be a little tired, and not lift the lid as much as was intended. In good order, they should lift the lid enough, and easily go the rest of the way in your hand.

OK, thank you very muchTK and Mike for the replies. It is quite heavy to lift, so, as I suspected, new dampers required.
It shouldn't be heavy to lift.
You're looking at maybe £60 for a pair of OEM dampers from EBay, which are easy to fit, with just a flat blade screwdriver, while someone else holds the lid up for you. Plenty of videos on Youtube.

It's a routine maintenance thing on a 13 year old SL and estate cars. Nothing to be worried about.

Check the part number on your existing struts and the Newton rating and ensure you get the same as there are at least two different Newton ratings. I have a pair of unused ones in the garage that are too small a Newton number and don't work.

The boot lid on my R129 , which was not strut assisted , was a surpringly heavy thing to lift .

I have done this on my CLK a coupe of times, but the advice is much appreciated.
