I want to change the plates on my 2017 Sl400 to my personal reg.
The front ones dead straightforward, however the rear not so.

it’s currently fixed with 4 pan head bolts, I think M6. I bought some nice new caps to cover the heads thinking they would be standard number plate screws. They don’t fit the pan heads……

I can’t really stick the plates on as there are four raised metal pads where the bolts go in and i think these are way to small to hold a plate if sticky pads are put there.

The mounds protrude from the flat part of body work by about 8mm, so again seems a bit too much gap to pack out.

i’ve been trawling the internet to try and find caps for the screws without any luck.

Any of you have any ideas how to solve this or better still where i can simply get some suitable yellow covers

Thanks

I have stuck my plates on because i dont like the screws /bolts and they compromise the inegrity of the plate. If you look online you can get extra thick sticking pads that will take up the thickness of the mounting lugs. Sometimes you need to put a thin one over a thick one to make sure its fully clear of the lugs , otherwise you might get some slight distortion where the lugs are. Just check before finally mounting.. I have done it on my last 4 MBs including my wifes R230 and they have all been absolutely fine and i think look so much better. At least both south coast teams will be staying up this year (Saintsfan)

got some, thank you.

as for staying up it’s a good job we got so many early points as we’ve been dire for weeks on end.
Personally i’m not a Potter fan, think his myth overrates him.

I agree fully regarding the "no screws" approach. Looks so much cleaner in my opinion. On my previous SL350 R231 I attached a steel number plate holder and used extra thick double sided tape to pack out just past the level of the M6 screws then put on my plate. Also looks great on my current W221.

If you go to eBay and type number plate plinth into the search box up will pop an item from MB Newcastle at around £8. Its a plastic mount with a very fine rim and mounting holes exactly where you need them. Perfect for what you need.IMG_1987.jpeg
