Hi all

Just popped another 2GB of RAM into the laptop ( total 4GB ) , but it says it is only recognising 3.37GB of it ....

Any ideas ?

Thanks

Assuming Windows 7 (Windows 32 bit) will only ever see that, you need 64 bit for it to see more...

Even if you put 8gb in it...

Do you have a 32bit OS? If so that is why. Also some will be used by the on board graphics if you dont have dedicated graphics card.

Not sure i have an Intel 945 Chipset ....

Sticker on the laptop says AMD Athlon X2 64 ATi Radeon Graphics

Where would i get a 64 bit copy of W7 ?

Are you running Windows 7 or Vista?

If Vista install Service Pack 1

What model of laptop do you have? if you can read the model/part number from underneath we can check what you have...

If you installed windows 7 yourself - it should have come with both 32 and 64 discs.

It's a Toshiba Equium L350-11D.

Came with Vista , but was terrible , so it has W7 Enterprise on it now. Installed by an IT bod mate.

ok - so you have Windows 7 installed (laptop shipped iwth Vista back in 2008)

1. Verify if you have 32-bit or 64-bit version installed:

CONTROL PANEL --> SYSTEM

Look for Installed Memory - it will show you amount installed and amount usable.

Look at System Type - will say 32-bit or 64 bit.

2. Remove the new 2Gb which you have installed and check the above again.

The result under installed memory should be 2.00GB (1.xx GB usable)

According to Toshiba specs, and based one most modern laptops, the graphics memory is shared with the RAM and therefore is 'not available/usable) by the system

You laptop usues upto 831Mb for shared resources...

manufacturer : ATI
type : ATI Radeon® X1250
memory : up to 831 MB total available graphics memory with 2 GB system memory MB
memory type : shared

-------

Please verify the above and we there are a couple of tweaks you may be able to do if things are different.

If you have the full licenced windows 7 you will have to do a clean install to move to 64 bit
