Random but curious

Just had some work done on the rear parcel shelf / boot area of my CLS. Looked up and noticed wires etc in the boot exposed. I cant recall if there was ever a cover of sort here or has it always been ‘exposed’ as pictured?

It’s the same on my W213, and a few others I have seen, so just normal cost cutting from Mercs.
