Real Buyers? …. So annoying!

When I was selling new cars we used to sell very nearly as many convertibles (new and used) in the winter as the summer. In summer they sold themselves....in winter people used to think they were getting a better deal because of the season.....but they were not!!....Glasses Guide don't put the book prices down because of the weather!!!
 
Never taken more than a couple of weeks to sell a car and never reduced an advertised price.
But have been selective with the time of year and I'm with you on the fact that Spring is a good time.
I've learnt you can go as early as March with an MX-5 as people can sense the longer days approaching.....;)
Have sold 6xMx5's I'm with you on that one,

I always thought that Glasses guide used auction results and asking prices to generate their valuations. How they would have done that years ago is beyond me, so perhaps just “experience”.
 
Not asking prices...... actual sales/purchase prices. They have dealers they refer to......the company I work for used to be one for the caravan version of the Guide......but they helpfully stopped producing it at Xmas!!!
 
Selling is seasonal and January / February is probably the worse time to sell because a lot of people are still paying their Christmas bills. The problem with sites like marketplace is that it's full of people that have nothing better to do than scroll. Odd messages, at odd hours from people who probably don't have two pennies to rub together.

My mum's MX5 was without doubt my most painful experience of selling a vehicle. It was a word of mouth contact, I hadn't really bothered to advertise and had set a price that was cheap enough for what it was to avoid any haggling. I wasn't at my most tolerant as she'd been dead less than a year but I've never come closer to splitting someone's head open with a breaker bar. :mad:

3 separate visits, each the best part of an hour, trying to drive the price down for the most desperate and spurious reasons. When he trolled out the line "Oh, I can buy a Miata for less", I lost it. "So f*ck off and buy one then, because you're not buying this car. I'd rather leave it on the drive to rot than take your money"

And rightly so. To misquote "45" and '47," a deal is one that works to both parties advantage.

(There are too many idjits around who, having seen the British Apprentice, think that they can get a discount on a price by just asking for it. Life ain't so simple, Babe)

And yes, an imported Miata will always sell for less because you can't really see the history and, come resale time, it will always resell for less. Ditto all Japanese imports - fine cars that they may be, for very good cultural and meteorological reasons)
 
Much better today - a nice couple rang, said they were on the way, arrived, looked around it, bought it at the advertised price 👍👍 sad it’s gone as it was so nice - but no spare room for it to languish 🥲

There's no such thing as a price that's cheap enough to avoid any haggling.

If you'd advertised the car for a quid some twunt would have offered you 50p.
 
Absolutely.... who pays the asking price on a car?.....just the gullible would be my answer. And equally who prices them expecting to get asking price?... not me. It's s game...sellers leave wiggle room, buyers haggle a discount.... everyone is happy. The guy I bought mine off was adamant that his price was final and no discount would be forthcoming. But when it came to the crunch and cash was in front of him he crumbled....not by much....but a few hundred quid is a few hundred quid! I would not pay asking price on a car out of principle!......I'm still a car dealer at heart!!!😃
 
Reading the newer posts since my previous posting here reminds me of my first brand-new car.
It was ln 98 a v6 Mondeo - I had side airbags fitted etc - everything was electric - I kept the
vcar for just over 6 yrs and went to sell it with about 44k on the clock. The interior was like new -
the car had a few dings from carless/care-free parkers atc, slight kerb on 2 alloys but other than that,
a very good, one-owner example in black. I advertised the car in Gumtree I think the freebie was called -
got many water of time calls and this joke rang just before 9am just as I came out of the shower, getting ready for work
(two tyres were nearing 4mm) and as I was very honest - the guy picked up on the advert and costed the ding repair, wanting new tyres
etc - (I can't recall how much I sold it for) and offered me loads less - I thanked him and put the phone down - he was for sure a waste of time

I had many other wasters calling me but I knew the advertised price for the car/conditon was serious VFM and I knew the first lot of people

#was prepared for as I wanted them to be happy (I had 2 new tyres waiting to go on the car before I decided to sell and gave them to the
guy at a bit less than what I paid)

I had a call from the bloke about a week later (I thought what the heck) -he thanked me for being such a "nice..honest man.."
I was glad my first brand new car I'd bought had gone to such a nice couple. It was the first car I'd sold and my heart sank
when they drove it away. The good news was that my new, first MB was already behind the gates of our drive:D

Clearly there is, as the next person along bought it. They did ask once if there was movement, I said no, they said ok and bought it anyway. And that's the crux of it, as our second hand car dealer has raised - what matters more? Getting money off regardless, or getting the item? Which are you willing to compromise on at that particular time?

Those twunts are a) easy to spot and b) clearly not a serious buyer, so quick and straighforward to shut down.
