So having no back glass on my Vito, I decided last year to buy and fit a rear camera and a digital rear view mirror (DRVM).
To attach this to the window I got hold of a standard rear view mirror (RVM) and the digital one straps over the front.
This was fine until the clips on the RVM failed (probably due to the added weight of the DRVM)
Not wanting to go through the faf of sourcing another RVM and having the same issue, I called upon the help of a friend and his 3D printer.
We started off taking some measurements and pictures of the clip, put it into the design software and doing a test print.
We then test fitted and made adjustments where required until we got it spot on. This was the final result of that part.
From there we took a bunch of other measurements such as the distance between the clips on the DRVM and width of them, we estimated the angle of the windscreen and started to design the rest of the mounting plate. We then set the printer off to print a prototype. Again, once this was done, we fitted it in the van, looked at any adjustments that needed doing and made these on the PC.
For a (what I think) is a nice detail, we added the Mercedes symbol to the rear.
Once we were happy, we switched the reel on the printer to some black ABS and ran the final print.
I must say, I’m super happy with the result.
James.
