can anyone recommend a place that is cheap and reliable for regassing the aircon system and won't try to sell me a condenser at the same time? ;)

the aircon isn't keeping with the hot weather at the moment and I hate driving with the windows down.

These guys sorted mine out for me a year ago:

http://www.airconco.net

They have moved to new premises and don't advertise that they work on cars anymore, but they did a good job on mine :) . The Saturday guy is called Jamie, it was Jamie that fixed my aircon.

In fairness to whoever you've spoken to, there's a pretty good chance that the condensor has failed hence the leak. It's common on W202s as the cooling fans accumulate dead flies/leaves etc behind them trapping moisture and rotting the condensor itself.

Definately worth checking properly before having the system regassed :)

That reminds me, next time I wash the car I'll blast the pressure washer at the bit between the fans and the condenser! :)

Boring job and needs care, but on an old car there will be a mass of bent bits on the front face of the radiator from stones flying up which effectively throttle the air passing through.

Worth carefully straightening to give more flow and then blasting from the inside with the pressure washer - I did mine while changing the polybelt with the fan blades off - watch out for the fly squash soup!

anyone have a pic of their engine bay on where to clean?
Open the bonnet... you're looking at it! It's in front of the radiator, underneath the cross member/slam panel and behind the front fans. It's between the centre of each fan and the condenser that all the debris collects.

Is it lack of cold air through temperature, or airflow?

I replaced the cabin filter on mine recently and it made a huge difference to airflow.
