Greetings from the USA. I have a 1979 R107 280SL, which you will no doubt recognize as a European model. The car makes a chattering noise from the fuse box area. I have tracked it one specific relay in that area. I replaced the relay and the new relay chatters as well. The odd thing is that the relays begins to chatter once the engine is at running temperature and only when I come to a full stop, car in gear and foot on the brakes. It does not chatter in neutral or Park of if the RPM's are above idle speed. I would appreciate the guidance of this group. Thank you.

Yes it sounds like a bad earth or connection, you have changed the relay so just make certain all the connections are solid,as your car is getting on check the earths there might be some rust under the connections.
