I know nothing about this, but would like a bit more go. I appreciate a diesels torque and any possible improvement on fuel consumption would be a bonus.

So without hijacking the other thread on remapping (or chipping if it's possible) would appreciate some information. Please forgive any silly questions...

I think that a chip is placed inline with the engine ECU, and a remap is somehow plumbed in via a laptop.

1.Can a diesel Mercedes be chipped?
2.If so, can the chip be removed and will the tune revert to its previous standard map?
3.If the car is remapped will the tune always be lost if the battery is disconnected?
4.If the car is remapped will a service or a fault finding exercise potentially revert the car back to it's previous state of tune if the tech is not told of the update?
5. Without going stupid, what is the potential from standard for a 2007 320 cdi V6 engine with either option.
6. What are the benefits and downsides between chipping and remapping?

Cheers!

Just to clarify, chipping is what is done to older cars that don't have a obd plug to the car correct me if I'm wrong, chipping replaces the cars existing CPU

1 - it is a 2007 car so you would remap it unless you are talking about a tuning box
2 - If using a tuning box then when it is removed the car goes back to standard settings
3 - Disconnecting a battery should not delete the map
4 - I mercedes sevices the car and carries out a software update then you will lose the Map however reputable remappers will ofeer free remaps if this occurs
5 - not sure but in the region 260-270bhp and 430-450lb/ft
6 - remapping is always better ans the fuelling is adjusted more accuately but if you need something that can be removed easily the a good tuning box like brabus would be good

Anyone feel free to correct me if anything is wrong

Hello

I had the Brabus D6 box fitted on my E320Cdi

Not only did it do more mpg it also made it rather nippy...

You could if you wanted you can unplug and remove if you sold that car.

Insurance with the box fitted was only £50 more.

I'm tempted to fit one on the current barge for better mpg I'm not bothered about the vroom... :)

Thanks for all the input.

So the fueling might be better set up by the remap but having to travel from N.E. Scotland would be a hassle every time the map needed to be re-installed whereas a good tuning box (Such as a Brabus) would be plug and play?

I see a potential of an added 30/40 horses but is that a corresponding increase of torque too? All our other motors are diesel and with the ones with manual boxes like to use the low down grunt of the engines rather than top end revs. I notice with the 320 it tends to almost rev out on kickdown where with my other engines (with a manual G box) I rarely need to go past half revs to achieve almost max acceleration. I appreciate a lift on the loud pedal can induce an up change. Can a remap or the tuning box alter the gearchange scenario where the 320 cdi engine achieves its highest torque lower down with gearchanges happening at lower revs but without losing good acceleration?

What year is your E320 Godfrey and does it have the IL6 or V6 engine?

Buy the Brabus box, the car gains 48bhp and a fair amount of torque (the amount escapes me right now)

You can pick a second hand one up for about £400 and it is, as far as I'm aware, the only tuning box given the stamp of approval by Mercedes.
